Travel to Cape Town -
getting here is the first step!

If you're planning to travel to Cape Town on holiday, I'd say - drive or fly. Public rail and bus travel in South Africa are not for the fainthearted, and as a family holiday option I would say they're out of the question.*

If you're planning to be in Cape Town at least a couple of weeks, using your own car then traveling to Cape Town by road is feasible. The distance may be a factor, but it’ll be worth it.

If you're considering using a hire car to travel here from one of the other major South African centres, don't do it! With the advent of cheap airfares to Cape Town , flying is now affordable and soooo much quicker :)

*There are two notable exceptions to this "rule". (From a cost point of view they are at opposite ends of the spectrum!)

The first exception -- if you are considering a backpacker-style holiday then the Bazbus (www.bazbus.com) is a great option for you. Based on the European hop-on, hop-off touring models, it's a reasonable, value-for-money, flexible way of getting around.

The second exception - you could travel by train from Pretoria to Cape Town on Rovos Rail (www.rovos.co.za/journey-cape.html). This is a luxury of a lifetime experience that only a few families could consider, but I include it here for the sake of completeness!
