Update and opinion - Cape town refugee situation
by: Alison

It seems many of the Cape Town attacks on foreign-owned shops where orchestrated by local business men cashing in on the fact that xenophobic violence was ongoing elsewhere.

What I say is this -- if there were a respect for the rule of law in South Africa, these kind of attacks would never have gained the momentum they did. And looting opportunists would have thought twice, because they would likely have been caught and held to account.

It's all indicative of the mindset of lawlessness that is part and parcel of life here in SA.

Jonathan Jansen of www.thetimes.co.za sums it up for me:
"... this is not xenophobia. This is simply an extension of the criminal behaviour rampant across the country.... Day after day ordinary citizens, South Africans to boot, are hunted down in their homes by criminals... "

South Africa's leaders need to address corruption and ineffectiveness throughout the police and justice systems. Until they do, nothing will change.

And South Africans from the president downwards need to commit themselves to acting with integrity in every sphere of life.
