Wedding memories –- Next stop – Simonsig. Another trip down memory lane for us - we bought the wine for our wedding reception from this farm! The tasting room is one of my favourites from its broad vine-clad stoeps and clay-tiled floor to the beautiful yellow- and stinkwood tables that you sit at. And I love the homely touches - like the cat! This is a great stop for children – we picnicked here under the shady oaks and worked off some excess energy on the jungle gym once we’d made our wine choices.
On this particular trip we made a whistle stop at Delheim. Delheim is a family owned estate and has a very personal atmosphere. I love its tucked-away-up-the-valley feel, as well as 2 of its white wines – the intriguingly named Spatzendreck (sparrow poo!) and the Gewurztraminer have stuck in my mind since my first taste of them. The kids loved the wishing well and had to be restrained from helping themselves to other peoples’ “wishes”!
Loads of history and atmosphere I can’t write about the Stellenbosch wine route without mentioning Blaauwklippen. This estate is justifiably famous with Cape Town families for all its wonderful open-air options as well as loads of history, carriage rides (and the carriage museum) and the Carriage Bistro, which is a family-friendly restaurant with a great playground. In all, this 300 year-old destination is well worth a visit.
It’s not over yet... Here’s the final stop in our day! Mooiberge Farm Stall for some Strawberry picking!
If you ask the kids what they like most here it’s a case of strawberries or scarecrows? ..strawberries or scarecrows? They are hard pressed to choose! Seriously, the fields are littered with funky scarecrows and the strawberries are out of this world!
This is just a taste of all that the Stellenbosch region has to offer. Take a look at the
Cape Winelands
page for more inspiration!
