Southern Sun
Cape Town

Southern Sun hotels in Cape Town are a popular choice with visitors.

If you want a good location for vacation travelers, combined with mid-range hotel accommodation, they are a reasonable bet.

If they don't suit or can't accommodate you, I offer some comparable alternatives down below.

Some are more suited to business travelers – stick with me, I’ll make sure you don’t end up in the wrong one!

Here they are, arranged by approximate location...

Cape Town CBD and Waterfront

Cullinan
The costliest option probably because it’s the closest to the V & A Waterfront (but not IN the Waterfront, please note!). I’ve heard a complaint that the pool is small and situated on the roof, so this is not a place for lazing your day away poolside, rather a good touring base in the City. It’s a pleasant 15 min stroll from here to the heart of the V & A.
The Cullinan

Waterfront
Don’t be misled, this hotel is NOT inside the Waterfront, despite its name! It is right beside the Cullinan and actually slightly FURTHER from the Waterfront entrance (though it’s only a matter of metres!) Again, you’ll take a pleasant 15-20 min stroll to reach the heart of the V & A.

There’s not much to choose between the two, in my opinion.
S S Waterfront

If you’d really like to stay IN the Waterfront but don’t want to pay four and five star hotel prices, how about a fully serviced, secure Waterfront apartment? They
  • are way more convenient and central
  • have a far nicer location right on the waters’ edge
  • offer great flexibility with all the waterfront shopping and restaurants a very short walk away

Cape Sun
This is the best value of the very central ‘Suns’ – its location (cnr of St Georges Mall and Strand Street, just a block from Adderley St) gives it a very city feel and makes it less suitable for families and (I’d say) too far to walk to and from the Waterfront.

Garden Court De Waal
Just beyond the Company Gardens, this is a good budget hotel option, probably more frequented by business travelers.

Beyond the City Bowl

Garden Court Eastern Boulevard
Right on the Eastern Boulevard, this hotel is again probably more frequented by business travelers. It’s a convenient base between the city and the airport.

Southern Sun Newlands
It was formerly the Newlands Garden Court and before that the Newlands Holiday Inn - this hotel has gone through a few mutations!

But it’s in good shape and perfectly situated for the Newlands rugby stadium and cricket grounds and is also convenient for the Claremont CBD, Kirstenbosch and the University of Cape Town.
