September Weather in Cape Town

I have a friend who moved here from the UK. She says that September weather in Cape Town is remarkably consistent - "in the second week of the month my feet thaw out, every year!"

So there you have it! Though mourning her lack of double glazing and central heating (on sunny, winter days in Cape Town it’s often colder inside your home than out) she admits that once September arrives, spring warmth is not far behind it.

The rainfall and temperature figures look like this

Average daily maximum temperature: 19 degrees C ( degrees F)

Average daily minimum temperature: 9 degrees C ( degrees F)

Average monthly rainfall 40mm ( inches)

Days with > 1 mm rain: 10

This is the month when all the oak trees burst into shaggy, tender leaf. The vineyards are covered with a veil of green and strawberries and watermelon hit the supermarkets - yum!

September -- What to pack?

  • warm layers in case you hit the last remnants of winter
  • T shirts, shorts and even swimming costumes for the hot days
  • sunblock, sunglasses, hats

September -- What's on?

Cape Town International Comedy Festival , various venues around the city, first three weeks of the month

Cape Outdoor Adventure and Travel Experience Exhibition, last weekend of the month

Whale Festival, Hermanus , last weekend of the month

There are still some off-season accommodation specials around, so for goodness' sake ASK when you book!
