Rhodes Memorial on the slopes of Devils Peak, Capetown

My first visit to the Rhodes Mem was in my first year at UCT - I won't tell you how long ago that was! A room-mate and I from residence made the pilgrimage up the mountain and treated ourselves to traditional English tea and scones.

The staff are pukkah, old-school-traditional and I am sure between them they have at least a century?s service!

This tea garden is sublimely positioned looking out over the Devil?s Peak section of the Table Mountain National Park where you often see herds of springbok, and the odd zebra or quagga.

It?s another fantastic breakfast venue, particularly on a dry winter?s morning when you can watch the sun rise across over the Hottentots Holland and revel in the glorious Cape scenery.

I love visiting there - they bring back good memories of the colonial English tea rooms of my childhood.

Make sure you take a walk around the Memorial afterwards and soak up a bit of Cape colonial history amongst the bronze statues and sandstone pillars.

Inside or Out?

You can sit out on the terrace, or if the weather is less conducive it's cozy and welcoming inside the thatched, stone-built cottage.

The cottage is inline for a face lift as part of the Table Mountain National Park upgrade programme, so I hope they won't renovate the character out of it :)
