Knysna or Plett?
by: Alison

It's hard to choose and comes down to what you are looking for.

Plett is quite a glitzy little seaside town, surrounded by... polo estates (weird)! But out of season it's not buzzing with activity. It has an incredible position overlooking the ocean and is very beautiful.

Knysna is larger, more historic and characterful. It is set alongside the Knysna lagoon which is stunning. You won't see the sea unless you stay on the Eastern Head, but it's still incredibly scenic. I would recommend staying on Leisure Isle, maybe at Amanzi as it has an awesome view of the Heads.

Knysna has a larger permanent population and has long been SA's favourite town to visit. There's lots to do and loads of restaurants and coffee shops.

More happening than Plett.

I would probably choose Knysna, but there's not much in it :-)

Kynsa to Safari location
by: Anonymous

Hi - thanks so much for the reply. we are going to book into the safari for 2 nights so depending on the check in times for that day we should be able to do the 3 hour drive.

would you recommend Knysna or Plett to stay in? is one way busier to go out?

Thanks
caroline

Good question, lots of people want to know this!
by: Alison

Amakhala Game Reserve is about 80km (50 miles) beyond Port Elizabeth, on the coastal road. Given the road, which is twisty and a single lane each way I would allow an hour from P.E.

The drive from Plett to P.E. is around 200km (approx 130 miles). The road is good for the most part, but to be safe allow 2 hours to cover the distance.

So... 3 hours driving,
first day safari leaves at 11am ...
yes, it's possible.

Do I recommend it? Nope!
Here's why... the best time of day to spot the game is early morning, just as it gets light. You will see plenty of animals during the day, but dawn is much better. So if you can squeeze a night at Amakhala into your budget, I strongly recommend that rather than the day safari option.

If your budget doesn't stretch to over-nighting at Amakhala, how about staying at or near Addo and doing the crack-of-dawn self drive/guided drive into the park? We have done that with fantastic results, as you can see! It's not rocket science and you don't need a fancy vehicle - a little, hired hatchback will do the trick.

Let me know what you decide!
