Cape Town Family Holiday Magic

Parents + Gran + a twelve year old

What is the best possible route from JHB to Cape Town with a one night stop over both to and from?

We would like to spend some time in Knysna as well.

We are looking for bed & breakfast or self catering accomodation.

Regards
Sharon

Hi Sharon,

Knysna is not an easy spot to include on a one-night-stopvover-only journey between Jo'burg and Cape Town.

The journey between Jhb and CT is around 1500km, so a good 8 hours driving each day.

The distance between Jhb and Knysna is just over 1200km.

The distance from Knysna to Cape Town is around 500km.

So I guess you could make Knysna your overnight stop if you were prepared to drive 1,200km in one day and then 500-odd km the next. But would that give you time to appreciate Knysna? I don't think so. :(

I would strongly advise trying to spend 2 nights on the road - maybe drive Jhb to Graaff Reinet, then Graaff Reinet to Knysna, then Knysna to Cape Town...

Graaff Reinet accommodation is listed here.

Our Knysna favourites are detailed on this page.

I hope that helps :)

On the way home you could choose to go via the N1 all the way to Jhb, or via Kimberley.

I have never driven via Kimberley so cannot comment, unfortunately.

On the N1, we have found that Colesberg or Bloemfontein make good stopover points.
