May Weather in Cape Town
May weather in Cape Town is a mixed bag. It can be a bit changeable but it’s still a marvellous month with more warm, dry days than cool, wintry ones.
May Weather in Cape Town
The rainfall and temperature figures look like this:
Average daily maximum temperature: 20 degrees C (68 degrees F)
Average daily minimum temperature: 9 degrees C (48 degrees F)
Average monthly rainfall 65mm (2.5 inches)
Days with > 1 mm rain: 11
Cold hard statistics make the month look cool and wet, but to my mind that’s not accurate. Most days are closer to 25 degrees C than 20, with the average dragged down by one or two days at around 15 degrees C. Really warm days can reach 30 degrees C!
1mm of rain is a minute amount! Generally there are one or two wet spells lasting a day or two in the month.
It’s a month of very little wind, calm and still.
The first weekend in May is always a long one because of the
public holiday
on May 1st. Schools have gone back after the April school holidays, so May is not a busy month on that front.
In May the Cape begins to feed itself up for winter with many of the Foodie events of the year –- the Gourmet Festival and the Good Food and Wine Show in the city itself, the South African Cheese Festival in Franschhoek and the Olive Festival in Riebeeck Kasteel. It’s a surfeit of culinary delights!
More good news if you’re planning a visit is that the official ‘off’ season starts on May 1st, so loads of accommodation deals offer good discounts from that date.
Come and indulge at a discount!
