Kruger will take quite some time...
by: Alison

Hi Lior,

You have planned to hit the touring highlights of SA and that is great. You may find fitting Kruger in takes up a lot of time, though. It is a 5-6 hour drive from Jhb, and if you take a bus it will take the best part of a day. So you will spend two days just travelling to and from the Park before you get inside to see any animals. Flying to Nelspruit is possible, but comparatively expensive.

Maybe plan to fly straight down to the Eastern Cape and spend more time there. Addo National Park is a pretty good introduction to safari (though it is tiny compared to Kruger) and that may be a good option given your time constraints.

Travel down the Garden Route stopping on the way. Storm's River, Nature's Valley and Plett are all wonderful places, as are Knysna and Wilderness. You could go shark cage diving in Mossel Bay, or at Gans Baai closer to Cape Town.

From George head inland and continue to Cape Town via Route 62. It is a spectacular journey and you will love it.

Time wise, if you don't do Kruger you could spend 2 days at Addo, 5 or 6 days along the Garden Route and the remainder in and near Cape Town.

The whales will still be around near Hermanus, so that is a day trip you can do from Cape Town.

How do you plan to travel? A hire car is not really value for someone travelling alone. Public buses are cheapest, but the Bazbus might be your best option -- not cheapest but convenient as it stops at Backpackers all along the way.

Spend more time in the Eastern Cape, it is one of the unexplored destinations in South Africa that is still very exciting!
