July Weather in Cape Town

july weather in cape town photo, platteklip gorge photo

Yes, this photo was taken in July!
It's sunset from Platteklip Gorge on Table Mountain

July weather in Cape Town is generally wet and cold. You'll hear much talk of 'cold fronts approaching Cape Town' from the weather forecasters - that's what brings the storms! Between cold fronts you usually have warm sunny weather for a few days at a time.

If we get snow on the high ground in the Western Cape, it'll usually fall in June, July or August.

When it rains it's often torrential. Umbrellas get blown inside out, so leave yours at home and bring a raincoat instead!

The rainfall and temperature figures look like this:

Average daily maximum temperature: 18 degrees C (64 degrees F)

Average daily minimum temperature: 7 degrees C (45 degrees F)

Average monthly rainfall 82mm (3.2 inches)

Days with > 1 mm rain: 12

This is a month of lashing storms interspersed with beautiful still days (like the one in the photo at the top). The countryside is lush and green, though the vineyards are bare and dormant.

July Weather in Cape Town -- What to pack?

  • You'll need an overcoat or warm anorak, depending on whether you're here on holiday or on business.
  • An umbrella can be useful, but it may get turned inside-out in the high winds
  • plan your wardrobe in layers so that you can peel off if the sun gets too hot

July Weather in Cape Town -- What's on?

The first half of July is local school holidays. Not many up country visitors, but there's a bustle of school-going age kids about.

The closest weekend to July 14th is always the Bastille Festival in Franschhoek . It's busy - book ahead -- but worth a visit.

From the first weekend to the end of the second weekend in July the Oyster Festival is on in Knysna. Cycling events and the (in)famous Knysna Half and Full Marathons are the sporting highlights. There are lots of other exciting activities all through the week. Head on up the Garden Route and enjoy a change of scene!

Of course the winter accommodation and restaurant specials are still in full swing, so there are great deals to be had!
