Garden Route Game Reserve

Garden Route Game Reserve more of the main facilities rhino on the Garden Route! we loved the cheetah sanctuary :)

I was a little hestitant before I booked at the Garden Route Game Lodge because I believe that the best South African game reserves are in Mpumalanga, not in the Western Cape. And I do still think that ;) but not everyone has the time fo money to travel there.

The absolutely best thing about our stay was that they arranged for our teenage girls to hand-feed their two elephants. They are the largest elephants I have ever seen and yet they were so docile and so beautiful. It was one of the most memorable experiences I have ever had.

Other highlights of our time there were

  • The early morning game drives

  • The food was great - Meals are included in their rates, which is great as there are no nasty surprises when you check out

  • Their Cheetah sanctuary -

  • I would certainly recommend the Reserve to international tourists who are visiting the Western Cape and who would like to see the "Big 5" without having to travel all the way to the Kruger Park.

However, for people who want the real wilderness deal, this will feel like canned game viewing - the property is small, with low growing vegetation and there are a lot of animals. You can view all of the Big 5 and more in an hour or two. That aspect is just too commercialised for me.

Thanks for taking the time to let us know what you thought. My kids would love the cheetahs - we have never seen a live one yet.

The Garden Route Game Lodge is one that people book regularly through my site, but you are the first who has reviewed it here. So thanks again :)
