Wheelchair friendly accommodation and things to do in Cape Town
by: Alison

Hi Justin,

Thanks for making use of my website!

I have found a few wheelchair friendly places suitable for a family to stay, so I'll tell you about those first with relevant pro's and con's of each.

You didn't mention whether you were looking for self catering or B&B/guesthouse, so I've found some of each. I like s/c for its flexibility and price :-)

Closest to Cape Town is Keurboom Cottage. It's self-catering, in a security development in Newlands, very suburban and probably the least "holiday-ish" option. But convenient and pretty reasonable in price. Possibly a bit limiting space wise for your younger son.

Another self catering option is Clovelly Lodge. Some of their self catering apartments are wheelchair friendly, others not, so it really depends what they have available. They also do B&B.

Now onto Guesthouse/B&B's

First up is Mnandi Lodge, well located near Blouberg beach which is a good beach for easy access even without a quad bike/4x4. It also makes access to the city centre easy for sight seeing. (Simonstown is a lot further from the CBD, but that's not such a bad thing especially near Christmas. And you'll find you drive all over the place in Cape Town to see the sights!)

Back down south again, Tuscan Villa in Fishhoek. This is a guesthouse option.

Fishhoek beach is also good for carrying access, there's lots of parking, you can park RIGHT there and it's just a step or two onto the beach.

Activities
The Silvermine nature reserve has a wonderful boardwalk around a dam, lots of fynbos all around and it's a great place to spend the day. There are braai areas and you can hang out and enjoy. It'll cost you R10 per person but it's worth it.

Boulders penguin colony is also fully accessible for you and a great hit with all ages.

The Aquarium will be good, if you haven't had enough of that sort of thing already at uShaka in Durbs.

Definitely visit the Scratch Patch, but near Simonstown NOT the Waterfront. The Waterfront one is too small for a wheelchair to manoeuvre.

The Cable Car is a spectacular option and all but two of the viewpoints are wheelchair accessible.

In the Winelands, Blaauwklippen will be a good option for you, or Spier. Spier is definitely the more commercial option, but has a lot to offer a family including the Cheetah Outreach project and Moyo's restaurant.

Please double check about wheelchair access before you book -- just to be sure!
