I hope you won't need to find the Department of Home Affairs while you're in Cape Town, but in case you do, here's a neat summary of the details.

Parking on the street in the Cape Town city centre can be trying ; ) Barrack Street in particular is a narrow, one-way street offering very little parking. I recommend that you find parking in Harrington or Canterbury Streets (see diagram) and walk the couple of blocks to Barrack Street as required. You'll save yourself a load of frustration!
Service excellence? Home Affairs has received a lot of criticism in recent months. The truth is, I have seldom found them either speedy or helpful in the 18 years I have had dealings with them! But... the tide may be turning : ). Last week a friend had her passport stolen the night before she was due to fly to Australia. How long did it take Home Affairs to issue her with a replacement document? A mere 40 minutes!! That's not too shabby, is it?
