Cape Town Airfare
To be honest even CHEAP flights to Capetown don’t come THAT cheap.
Your Cape Town airfare on an international flight is a costly item.
The cost of your airline tickets to Cape Town may munch a large part of your total trip budget.
But because it IS such a big expense, take the time to find the cheapest possible Cape Town airfare. It can save you a chunk of money. Even more so if you are a family group :-)
There’s no Cheap Flights to CapeTown formula, but here are my 3 first steps
- First of all, get a ball park figure of cost so that you can make comparisons.
I do this by searching with a site like Kayak.com -- Find Cheap Flights from 100+ Sites with One Click.
(It may take a few minutes, but it’s a good starting point).
Another good option is travelstart.co.za which (contrary to its domain name) searches flights all over the world, not just SA destinations.
- Secondly, bear in mind that “last minute travel discounts” to Cape Town or indeed anywhere else in SA are a non-event.
The rule of thumb is Book Early and for peak periods (November to March) Book Even Earlier!.
- Third and finally, establish your itinerary plans. Want to know why?

If you want to take in the Eastern Cape game reserves, the Garden Route and Route 62 as part of your trip, consider flying into Port Elizabeth and out of Cape Town or vice versa.
Similarly if you want to include the Kruger Park in your South Africa trip, flying in or out of Johannesburg is a worthwhile option.
Varying your departure or arrival city may seem to cost a little extra but it can save you back-tracking which gives you more travel enjoyment.

Cheap Cape Town London Flights from UK or Europe
The busiest route to Cape Town, South Africa is from London. While you might think that competition would drive prices down, that’s not always the case and disappointingly the main carriers’ (SAA, BA, Virgin) prices are generally fairly uniform.
In terms of getting the cheapest possible tickets to Cape Town, generally one finds that the less popular and least direct routes are more economical.
Johannesburg is South Africa’s economic and geographic hub, so it’s no surprise that the majority of flights pass though there. Flying in via Jhb offers the most options and the greatest flexibility and you can then catch a flight onward to Cape Town.
Or you may take a flight that is destined for Cape Town, but does a ‘bounce’ in Johannesburg en route. This is often cheaper.
In the past when we have been looking for cheap Cape Town to London flights we have found that flying via Jo’burg and Windhoek on Air Namibia was a good option.
Taking this fact a step further, arriving in Jo’burg via Istanbul on Turkish Airlines, or Addis Ababa on Ethiopian Air or Dubai on Emirates are all options you may want to consider.
However, if you are working on a tight time frame or travelling with family, indirect flights won’t serve your purposes. 24 hours or more (if you are coming from the States) in transit with cranky kids is bad enough with all the anticipation of the holiday still to come, but imagine the let-down on the way home!
Flights from the US to Cape Town
From the US, the carrier you choose may depend on what city you are flying from.
Virgin flies to Cape Town from either New York or L.A, and to Johannesburg from New York, L.A. or San Francisco.
South African Airways flies from New York, Washington DC, and Atlanta.
Emirates (known as the King of Cheap-but-Good) flies only from New York.
Delta flies from Chicago.
Flying via Europe from the States is a more expensive option because of high taxes.
Flights from Canada to Cape Town
There are no direct flights from Toronto to South Africa.
To get to Johannesburg I suggest looking at British Airways (via London), NorthWest (via Amsterdam with KLM), South African Airways (via New York JFK) and United (via New York JFK).
To get to Cape Town I suggest looking at British Airways (via London) and Delta (via New York Newark).
Emirates also fly Toronto-Dubai-Johannesburg and Toronto-Dubai-Cape Town.
Flights from Australia to Cape Town
Again, changing planes saves you money – from Melbourne or Sydney you can often fly cheaply with Thai, with an aircraft change in Bangkok en route to Johannesburg and then take South African Airways (SAA) on to Cape Town.
If you fly Singapore Airlines you must change aircraft in Singapore.
Malaysia Airlines flies with a change of aircraft in Kuala Lumpur.
A fare with Qantas is usually more costly, flying non-stop from Sydney to Johannesburg and then using SAA to Cape Town (Melbourne passengers fly Qantas to Sydney to connect).
South African Airways flies from Perth to Johannesburg where you change aircraft; (Melbourne and Sydney passengers once again use Qantas to connect.)
Cheap Flights to CapeTown -- Booking Online?
Depending on where you are travelling from, a South Africa airfare can be quite complicated to book online.
Using a travel agent well versed in the South Africa market is certainly less painful, even though it may end up costing you more. It’s a matter of how badly you want to save the cash!
Flexibility can also make a difference. If you have tight time deadlines and little room to manoeuvre in your arrival and departure dates, booking online may not be worth it for you.
On the other hand, there is something quite enticing (for me anyway) about using a consolidator to compare 100’s of different airfares and options at once.
