Care, Guidance and Protection

My grandmother had a load of favourite sayings. Some of them were totally irrelevant, but one that resonates deeply with me these days is this - "Blood is thicker than water" And the reason it resonates so intensely is because I now have kids. And while each child has a sibling sharing the house, they also have cousins - my brother's kids.

Now you are probably familiar with sibling rivalry...

And the hair pulling and name calling that goes with it. The phrase that springs to my mind is "Blood on the carpet" and I wish bloodstains were as easy to remove as water marks!
But joking aside, have you given much thought to the cousinly bond?

In our family, cousins are the perfect halfway mark between siblings and non-family members

Sure there is some squabbling and there are days (and weeks) when they don't want to be around one another. But the deep underlying friendships, the camaraderie and the easy companionship are completely different from the friendshsips with outsiders. They stick together through thick and thin and watch out for one another. In business terms, I'd say they offer each other Care, Protection and Guidance.
