Car Rental Cape Town-- Why do I advise you to find a decent Cape Town car rental?

cape town car rental

It gives you maximum flexibility. And a Cape Town airport car rental saves you shuttle or transfer costs, too.

For our family, the value of driving ourselves is HUGE - it delivers sights and experiences that you can't script from a tour bus or taxi-cab.

Without a doubt - for a family holiday in Cape town you are best served having your own vehicle.

If you still have concerns look at my FAQ below, or contact me.

Compare CapeTown car rental companies - what do I know?!

After all, I'm a local right? With a car of my own...

True! But the basic fact is that Cape Town car rentals are a numbers game. Industry competition is fierce but it still pays to get more than one quote and compare the car rental rates.

I have used various comparison tools over the years.

Until recently my gripe with them is that either

  1. They give you too little information to really assess the options or
  2. They do not accommodate one-way journeys (i.e. pick up in one location, drop off in another

As a default I fall back on the car hire company we have used successfully all over SA for the last 4 years (for both business and pleasure) - Europcar.

We keep using them because we are happy with their rates and service...

If you feel uncomfortable to taking my recommendation without comparing prices...

... that's okay, I totally understand!

Just below this box I've put the best search engine I can find for South Africa car rental.

It allows you to specify different pick-up and drop-off locations, and even 18 year old drivers!

You can use it to compare the rates of Avis, Budget, Europcar, Sixt, Alamo and Thrifty, basically all our top car rental companies here.

No need to just take my word for it!

(The search will take a few seconds and will open in a new window.)

Still thinking a Cape Town car rental may not be right for you?

There are certainly things that bother people and make them wonder if car rental in Cape town is a good idea. Here are the common concerns and FAQ's:

  1. I'm worried about driving on the left-hand side of the road

Lots of people worry about this one. What is surprising is how quickly you do adapt to driving on the 'wrong side' - and then you head home and have to change back again!

When we drove in Europe we used to stick a small chocolate bar to the middle of the steering wheel - a great visual reminder to be vigilant for the first day or two.
    It worked like a charm

  2. Is it safe to drive yourself in Cape Town. We hear so much about the crime.

I drive in Cape town every day and lots of nights. Between back and forth to school, running errands, going on outings and visiting places I feature on this website, I have never had any trouble on the roads.

As a visitor of course you will be less familiar with your surroundings, but that's no reason to assume you will become a crime victim.
    Take some simple precautions like...

    • lock all your car doors keep them locked while you travel. Central locking is a huge help with this.

    • hire a car with air-con so you can keep your windows closed and still be comfortable.

    • don't leave valuables on the passenger seat while driving, and definitely place them out of sight in the boot/trunk when the car is parked and unattended

    • if you are worried about getting lost in unfamiliar territory, hire a GPS navigation system for peace of mind or buy a good map book.

    • ask your accommodation hosts for safety tips and advice for their particular area
  3. Do I need an International Drivers License for my car rental Cape Town?

Car rental Cape Town - the bottom line on, then... ?

Using public transport to get around in the Mother City can be done but is not for the fainthearted!

Urban trains have a bad reputation for safety and the rail network does not cover the Atlantic Seaboard or Bloubergstrand area at all.

Buses may be infrequent along visitor routes as they are aimed more at commuter travellers.

And taxi-cabs are just not cost effective for more than the odd journey.

Public transport for backpackers? - Sure. For couples on a budget? Yep.

But if you're here to relax, and you have the family in tow... ?

I wouldn't consider it for a moment, and I don't advise that you do either!
