Campervan from Cape Town to Addo - Yeah!
by: Anonymous

It would definitely work to hire a camper van in Cape Town and head for Addo via the Garden Route.

The roads are all good and there is something very comforting about having your house on your back like a snail or tortoise!

Possible companies:
www.helderbergcamperhire.co.za
or
www.maui.co.za

You would need to stop at campsites - let's see what would I recommend?

Bontebok National Park (SanParks)near Swellendam - about 3 hours from Cape town, not sure if you want to stop that soon, lovely endangered wildlife to see there.

Ebb and Flow Campsite (SanParks) at Wilderness - 5+ hours from Cape Town, on a river, it's beautiful.

Swartvlei campsite near Sedgefield - 20 mins beyond Wilderness, right near a fabulous long beach.

Keurboomstrand near Plett - 1 hour + beyond Sedgefield, again a wonderful beach.

Nature's Valley (SanParks) - about 30 mins from Plett, forest, lagoon and beach, very other-worldly and away from it all!

Storms River Mouth (SanParks) - about 15 mins from Natures Valley, a dramatic surf-side experience.

Addo Main Camp itself (SanParks) - book ahead via Sanparks and make sure they put you in the caravan section (nice sites), not the tent section (miserable little sites)

Best of luck, hope this advice is not too late already. Send us feedback... we would love to hear!

Cape town Motor Home / Campervan Hire
by: Danette

Hi again

We are thinking rather than have to pack and unpack and find ALL those children's toys every couple of days - we might try the motor home thing.
Do you recommend a company for this?
Would it work going Garden Route as far as Addo?

Any handy hints?

Many thanks
Danette

No real places to avoid...
by: Alison

Hi Danette,

I cannot think of any places to really avoid with small children, but if you do go up Table Mountain, keep them close -- the edges are cliffs and it is a l-o-n-g way down!

Up the Garden Route, I really recommend a visit to the Elephant Sanctuary and Monkeyland near Plettenerg Bay -- both fantastic with kids that age.

Wow - managing two coeliac toddlers far from home must be a challenge.

Pick'n'Pay does indeed have a great home shopping service - here's the url https://www.pnponline.co.za/default.aspx. I use them all the time and they are great. Just tick the box to say 'no substitution' to avoid getting an alternative product if gluten free is out of stock!

The only snag may be if you are self catering and there is no-one at your establishment to receive the goods before you arrive. But I am sure you could make an arrangement with your hosts.

As to the local pre-school in Knysna, I am sure they would be up for it. But I'm not sure of your dates here - schools close for the long Christmas hols on 5 Dec 2008!

All the best with you plans.

Apologies for the late reply from me :-(
