The Barnyard has smartened up over the years, but its rustic appeal is untouched – to my mind nothing beats eating al fresco chaperoned by rowdy roosters and chortling chooks! Only the chickens have free rein – the other animals (geese, goats, rabbits, tortoises and birds at last visit) delight the children from the f-a-r side of the spacious playground. Somehow the proprietors have managed to coax the grass to grow into a verdant carpet, and the remaining pieces of dilapidated farm equipment are in direct contrast to the rest of the restaurant – it’s neat as a pin thanks to recent refurbishment!
We usually end up at the Barnyard for brunch or tea – they do delicious farm breakfasts and awesome cakes! That’s not to discount their lunches – with made-on-the-spot bread (nutty brown and yummy) and loads of delicacies to go with it you’ll be spoiled for choice. The Barnyard is bang at the foot of Ou Kaapse Weg, so a visit there combines well with a walk at Silvermine – head on up and work off some of that fine food!
