And there are loads more listed below...! When it comes to Cape Town restaurants, some have had more of our custom than others in the last 8 years. This one has been a regular haunt. However, given a fresh new look at the end of 2006, the Foodbarn has changed more than its name.
We thought it was just a minor facelift. Cape Cottage interior makes way for French Country style. You know what I mean... Then we realized there was more behind the overhaul than a designer’s desire for something more chic. There was the person of Frank Dangereux no less, the much acclaimed chef formerly of La Colombe fame. No wonder things were going French! It’s a shame in some ways. After all a rustic Cape farmstall was more in character for Noordhoek. (And I’m not sure the Foodbarn patron wants it to be touted as a child-friendly venue rather than a serious foodie haunt.) So, what’s changed? The menu, that’s for sure! And of course, the clientele. For us (and you, if you’re looking for a family friendly venue) the news is both good and bad. The glorious old oaks are still in place, protecting our happy offspring from the sun and the Southeaster. The food is more delicious and varied than ever and the coffee too. But the bill is likely to be a lot steeper, and your fellow patrons slightly less indulgent of Junior’s yells of delight (or lusty tantrums on discovering that his old favourite toasted cheese is no longer an option!) So you might want to explore other options further down the page before making up your mind about a child friendly Cape Town restaurants destinations... Tranquil retail therapy, Cape-style Noordhooek Farm Village is still home to another good restaurant and a pub, as well as some fascinating little shops. Don't miss Zimbabalooba, (a funky African-style clothing shop) and Swazi candles (can you believe what people can do with wax!?), both favourites of mine. And the art gallery is always a treat - you might just spot something you can't resist. Some people love venues that cater specifically for kids with play apparatus and children's dedicated play areas. Others prefer 'normal' venues that welcome children without going as far as providing a playground. Cape Town has plenty of both! Look at our other suggestions before you decide... In Tokai (closer to Cape Town) the Barnyard is also a great kid friendly Cape Town restaurant.
Dunes Restaurant and Bar in Hout Bay is a great day or evening venue. Tapas-style sundowner snacks overlooking Hout Bay beach... booking is advisable in season. Scarecrows Good Food and Deli, also in Hout Bay but in the valley this time, is a great place too. Simon's at Groot Constantia is a spectacular spot with a wonderful, outdoor-yet-covered area where children are very welcome. Delicious food and very upmarket, it's spacious enough that you won't feel hemmed in, and the kids can get onto the lawn for a run between courses without ever being out of your sight. Wang Thai, Lagoon Beach, Milnerton offers a great eastern fusion menu, including delicious sushi, right on the beach. You can sit inside or out, the staff are friendly and knowledgeable and the clientele a well-rounded mix of business, families and couples. and it's right next to the Lagoon Beach Hotel!
