Each Cape Town restaurant guide I've consulted offers a wealth of information and a squillion options to help you make a selection.

But to my mind they lack that extra something - the personal, "I've eaten there and loved it" feel.

And Cape Town restaurant guides make a living from advertising eateries that pay for a listing, which means what?

In a nutshell...

Great restaurants that aren't looking for new business don't always bother to get listed.

Now, if there's a restaurant anywhere that doesn't need to advertise, I'm interested!

It means they stay busy with regular patrons and word-of-mouth recommendations, the most reliable tips in the world.

How to get into my Independent Restaurant Guide to Cape Town

You can't! That's what makes it different!

Of course a restaurant can send us an invitation and we will plan to visit. But we pay our bills in full and don't recommend anywhere unless we truly like it.

I love to recommend the places that are a little out of the way, which you might not find without inside information.

The sort of places that (for me) say 'unique', 'Cape Town' and 'special'.

We're not restaurant critics, just a Cape Town family sharing their favourite places.

Some of them are casual affairs while others are smart. What matters to us is

• did we feel welcome?
• would we go back ourselves?
• did the food measure up to our hopes?
