Safety for our littlies is a concern close to everyone's heart!
by: Alison

Travel
Depending on your babe's weight you should be able to book a sky cot for the plane if you are flying - I really recommend this just to give you both a break when she is sleeping!

And for take-off, landing and any turbulence, ask the air hostess for the safest procedure - in my experience airlines differ as to what they expect. Some want you to strap the baby to you, others say it is better to hold them in your arms...

Car travel
Hire a car seat with your car - almost all car rental companies have this as an option.

If you will be here in our hotter months (between October and April) I also recommend a car with air con as you can travel with your windows up and still be comfortable. This gives lots of visitors peace of mind.

Baby-friendly activities

At 10 months she is into the details of everything, which is so rewarding!

The Scratch Patch is a great tactile experience for this age, just do watch out for her putting gemstones in her mouth as they are a choking hazard.

The Cape Town Aquarium is also a hit with babies - they are mesmerised by the huge glass tanks with colourful, moving exhibits :)

Another great Waterfront experience - the Harbour Cruise. It's short enough to not be nightmarish for you as parents, but fun for all3 of you.

The beach is so great at that age - they *love* the sand. Again, so tactile. Don't forget sunscreen and hats and stick to the warm 'side' - Fishhoek is a great baby beach, as is Boulders. My son made his beach debut at Boulders!

Head for Kirstenbosch with a picnic basket and you can have a lovely tranquil time enjoying the surroundings and exploring with her.

Food and Formula Safety
If you are self catering, don't be too worried. You can get excellent organic baby food at Woolworths and Pick'n'Pay supermarkets city wide ("Olli" is the brand, I believe)

Boil your water and cool it for formula, just to be on the safe side.

To avoid difficulty, you may want to bring your formula with you - my kids were fussy about changing brands!

Best of luck, and do let me know where you will be staying. It all helps other parents to make good decisions!
