Cape Town Family Holiday Magic

Cape Town, Hermanus, Knysna with a 3 year old

by Nitasha
(India)

My husband, 3yr old son and me are planning a 11 day trip to Cape Town in October.
Could you look at my plan , and tell me, if it sounds good.

Arrive on 10th October (4 nights; Capetown)

1 night Stellenbosch
3 nights Hermanus
2 nights Kynsa
1 night Johansberg (As our flight out is from there)

We are planning to hire a car at the Capetown Airport and leave it at George to fly out to Jo Burg. Does it look like a good idea ?

Also Could you please tell me the driving distances of the two-

1) Capetown - hermanus

2) Hermanus - Kynsa

And also the must dos with our young son.

Much regards & Thanks
Nitasha

Hi Nitasha

I like the look of your plan, you have obviously done some research :)

Only one thing I need to ask - do you have a particular reason to want to
stay so long in Hermanus?

Depending on what time of day your arrive there, I think 1-2 nights would be
enough, and then you could allocated more time to your road trip to Knysna.
In your place I would definitely do that.

Hiring the car from Cape Town airport and leaving it at George to fly back to Jhb is a good plan.

Cape Town to Hermanus will take you around 90 minutes via the coastal R44 route via Gordons Bay. This is the most scenic route. From Stellenbosch it will take you even less time - about an hour.

Hermanus to Knysna will take at least 5 hours, possibly 6. It really depends how often you need to stop for your son to stretch his legs and use
the rest room. Also, it is a scenic route, worth taking your time and stopping for meals / tea breaks on the way.

Must Do's in Cape Town
Take him to see the penguins at Boulders Beach, visit the Aquarium at the Waterfront, go to the Scratch Patch at the Waterfront. The Penny Ferry boat ride around the harbour will also be a great experience for him. Go up Table Mountain in the cable car. You might want to go to Cape Point and
visit the lighthouse there, and also the Ostrich Farm near the entrance to the Cape Point reserve. The boat ride out to Seal Island from Hout Bay is
also enjoyable.

Have you decided where you will stay? What is your preference for accommodation - hotels or self catering or something in between?

I hope this helps!

Warm regards
Alison
