We’re always on the look out for yet another great Cape Town family restaurant. Throw seafood into the mix and we are only too delighted to try them out for you!

A sad loss...

Our first top spot fell victim to... REDEVELOPMENT DEMOLITION...

I guess that's always the hazardous downside of having a prime seafront locations!

A new challenge

We were forced to test-munch a few more possibilities - strictly in the line of our duty to families everywhere, you understand ;-)

Location, location, location - sunsets al-fresco

I'm a sucker for sitting outside on a summer evening, letting the kids run on the beach if possible, and Cape Town is just the perfect place for that. So sticking to our original location - Bloubergstrand, with its amazing sunset views across Table Bay - we set to work.

Same dog, old tricks

To make sure we hit gold all over again, we decided to begin our new search in exactly the same way. So yes, we took the dog for a walk on Milnerton beach!

Add two sushi-loving kids and a spot of meticulous ask-all-your-mates research to the mix and we had our next test-meal all lined up - at Wang Thai on Lagoon Beach.

But first we had to check that the view measured up to our first choice, and the only way to do that was go back to the old photos.

Give or take a kilometre or two - we'd crept a teensy bit closer - we were still spot on.

Sure enough, couldn't fault the sky scenery to the West beyond Robben Island.
Yep, still there - the good ol' Cape Town summer sunset.

Fantastic! Now for the food.

Bearing in mind that the kids have grown up a year or two and adopted some expensive tastes, we weren't looking for chicken nuggets on the seafood menu THIS time!

We settled for a platter of delicious assorted Thai appetizers and the children thoroughly enjoyed their assorted spring rolls, satay skewers and deep fried prawn wraps. Yes they did lay off the sweet chilli sauce but hey, so did I!

By then we had taken the edge off our appetites but all in the name of duty ;) we went on to sample honey chicken, which should be called heavenly chicken in my opinion!

It was served with a large steamed rice bowl and had loads of scrummy, crunchy stir-fried veggies too. A little sushi added to the mix - we ordered a platter - and soon all of us had eaten more than our fill.

We had a quick chocolate spring roll cigar just for completeness' sake and then moved on to our final check.

The last test of a great Cape Town family restaurant.

Kayakers and dolphins in the sunset? Oh no! On this final point our venue failed the test. But the photo from last time is too good to waste, so I have left it in for you.

Table Bay Cape Town

In case you missed the first review, here's the story. On our first night out we noticed that these kayakers weren't paddling all that much. Then we saw a fin in the water beside them.

Shark?!

No! It turned out to be a trio of dolphins! We watched them cavort and play until the kayaks moved off.

It was the perfect ending to a great evening...

Wait a bit - sushi's not seafood!

Well, it is. And it also isn't, if you know what I mean.

But don't despair. Just up the coast a little way far from Wang Thai is the Blowfish with - you guessed it - the same awesome views, fabulous beach location, spacious enough for the kids to not get up the nose of your fellow diners and... seafood.

Sigh!

Glorious seafood from crayfish, prawns and langoustines to fresh slabs of kob, butterfish and ll else. Plus the ubiquitous sushi.

Watch out for my review coming soon!

And when you do go to Wang Thai

  • book ahead uness you plan to be there early. It has got really popular
  • sit outside for the best views and kid-friendly open space
  • a warm layer is good even on summer evenings
  • it's not cheap, but it's very classy. Great wine list, too

We recommend

Their sushi platters, honey chicken, cashew chicken, angry duck!
