Custom Search
August events - what's on in and around Cape Town in this (supposedly) wettest, wintriest month of the year? The last half of July has been warm and dry - totally sinister! For myself I hope August will bring plenty of rain to fill our dams and get us through the summer... To find an up to date August 2010 Cape Town weather forecast click here. Hermanus Food and Wine Festival - 6-8 August 2010Delicious wines, local produce, amazing whale watching on the side. All held at the same time as the Kalfiefees Afrikaans culture festival.
Cost: R95 per adult per day (or a weekend pass - R150 for 3 days), children - free More info about the food! http://winevillage.co.za/cms/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=146&Itemid=201 Bookings http://www.computicket.com/ Click here for accommodation in Hermanus. Canola Karnaval in Swellendam - 6-8 August 2010Canola flowers look good enough to eat - if you like margarine, that is! Seriously though, the yellow fields of blossom are marvelous at this time of year and Swellendam-ers invite you to join them in marveling. I would love to enjoy the Early Bird tour of Bontebok National Park (not to mention the rare and endangered bokkies themselves) followed later in the day by a Wildebraam liqueur cellar tour. If you are feeling active there are mountain bike trails, quad bikes and the half marathon and a 5km fun run.
Cost: Various, but really good value More info and bookings: http://www.canolakarnaval.co.za/ Click here for Swellendam accommodation options. Robertson Slow - 6-9 August, 2010Have you heard of the Slow Food movement? Well, Robertson residents are committed to Slow Living all year round, and one weekend annually they invite us all to join them in their wineries, homes and restaurants. This is the weekend for you to embrace flavours and food that are lovingly made and enjoyed, regardless of how long it takes. Download the full program in PDF format here, and BOOK early now - the guest allocations always fill up quickly.

Clanwilliam is really too far away for a day trip - 2.5 hours of driving each way. The festival displays are set up in the church hall in Clanwilliam itself, but the countryside around is at your disposal for day drives and forays to enjoy the species in the wild. Start with the Ramskop Reserve in town and head further afield - as far as the Biedouw valley, Nieuwoudtville and Vanrhynsdorp if you can. Cost: R25 for adults, R20 for children More info: http://www.cederberg.com/flowers.php P.S. This summary is put together with love and care, but errors do creep in!
