Looking for a Cape town day tour option?

Just to remind you, I am NOT a tour operator or travel agent, just a local mom who knows what makes my kids smile! I don't book Cape Town day tours or make arrangements.

What Cape town day tour options will delight your kids?

Are your children like mine - not interested in a whole lot of "Yada, yada, yada" and traipsing around hot places looking at "boring stuff"?

That's perfect!

Cape Town has highly entertaining yet mind-broadening options that you can enjoy as a family.

Early history can still be fascinating...

And for some insight that goes beyond South Africa's recent apartheid history, a visit to !Khwa ttu to find out more about the original inhabitants of the Cape is a must.

The San (or Bushmen as I have heard they actually prefer to be called) were here long before Bartolomeu Diaz or Jan van Riebeeck and his merry men, and they have lots to share about their 'lost' way of life.

Cook, play ball or get crafty Cape town day tour with a difference

If you want your kids to get acquainted with South Africa's complex social and political history, there are light hearted ways of doing it. You can explore it hands on through cookery, soccer, drumming or crafts with andulela.com.

Get out and walk!

If you'd like to hike as a family, whether it's nearby landmarks like Table Mountain and Lions Head or further afield, Ed Flitters of Cape Hiking is the man to contact.

Once he has established how fit and keen you all are (or aren't!) he will come up with a plan that meets your requirements.

Budding Marine Biologists in the Family?

For eye-popping marine options it's worth planning to spend a few days around Simonstown.

(Are you a Simonstown fan? You should be! Read on to find out why!)

A whale watching boat trip (seasonal) is guaranteed to get everyone's attention: a Southern Right whale is the size of 12 elephants so it is hard to miss! And you might get to see humpback whales, orcas and dolphins too as well as the fascinating Cape gannets diving for their prey.

Then if you have th stomach for it there is the possibility of great white shark spotting, and you needn't think you have to get into the water to really enjoy this. Amazing sights can be seen from the boat and you will all come away filled with admiration for this fascinating marine animal.

Alongside the great white sharks (or even instead of them if you prefer to stick to cute instead of awe-inspiring!) you can enjoy a trip to see thousands of Cape Fur seals at Seal Island.

Evolution? Creation? Who knows... but our local Primates are pretty intriguing!

Still around Simonstown but on dry land this time, I recommend walking with baboons as a high priority for a intimate look at primitive primate family values!

Tuxedos galore

Did I mention that Simonstown should be on your must-see-and-do list? Yes, before you leave the Southern Peninsula, make sure you visit the penguins at Boulders, prefereably by kayak. They may be a little niffy if you have sensitive snouts, but they are still always a hit for all age groups!
