The Cape Town airport code is CPT. This facility is no longer a sleepy regional backwater - with FIFA 2010 only months away traffic through our international airport is increasing daily.

The powers-that-be at the Airports Company pedalled hard to get everything upgraded for the FIFA World Cup. And they succeeded mightily!

With the final multi-storey parking garage completed shortly before kickoff, they have been handling flights pretty smoothly ever since.

CapeTown Airport Hotel

The Road Lodge is the 'Cape Town airport hotel'. It is very close to the terminal complex.

Late Travel Lodge 2009 review by a traveler:

"Only if you really have to... The hotel has 7 floors but doesn't have a lift (!) The rooms are small and sad.
But the good thing is that Road Lodge is just a 300 meters from car hire drop-off point, so if you have to leave a car in the morning it's the best place you can go."

Next closest hotel is only 10 minutes drive away (against the rush hour traffic) and gets highly satisfactory reviews!

Car Hire

We use and recommend Europcar - (and yes, this link earns me a commission) - we have used them in Durban, Johannesbrug, the Kruger Park and Pretoria, for business and leisure, and have always had good vehicles and good service everywhere.

All the big name companies and many smaller ones have offices at the airport, so if you have a favourite car rental brand, it's more than likely you can go with them in Cape Town, too.

Taxis

The official advice is that you should use only the authorised airport taxi company, Touch Down Taxis. This is not your most cost-effective option, though it is the safest and will give you peace of mind.

If you are planning to hire a car, I would say arrange it ahead and just collect it from the airport.

Or if you'd rather have someone else do the driving to give you time to settle down after your flight, arrange a transfer ahead of time and get your car delivered to your accommodation.

Cash Machines and Bureaux de Change (Forex Services)

There are ATM's in all the terminals, whether departure or arrival/domestic or international.

There is a bureau de change at Domestic Departures, and one in each of the International terminals.

VAT Refunds

If you're a foreign visitor you can claim back Value Added Tax when you leave Cape Town international airport.

The VAT refund office is on the ground level of International Departures. You'll need to show your goods to the administrator before check-in.

Then you go through passport control. After that you get the VAT back at the VAT office before the passport control and boarding gates. The refund will have the administrator's commission deducted.
