Bloubergstrand -

a beach named for the mountain it faces

Table Mountain in winter

view on a wintry day

Bloubergstrand is the place from which most of those classic Table Mountain shots are taken!

At university I had a friend who lived in a block of flats on this particular beachfront. His address was "White Sands, Blue Mountain Beach". The description is very apt.

This beach is part of the shoreline alongside Table Bay. You'll find your best views of Table Mountain along here. You'll also see Robben Island crouched in the Bay, and get to watch the ships waiting to enter the Cape Town Harbour.

As far as beaches go, this one offers some amazing surf. Be warned, it is also a regular haunt of kite fliers and kite surfers, because when the wind blows it really blows here!

This stretch does not offer the cleanest of Cape Town’s beaches. Harbour and other human activities in Table Bay contribute to an ongoing litter problem. Despite that, these beaches are still incredibly picturesque. We do our bit for the environment by taking a rubbish packet and cleaning up as we go.

We use this beach mainly to walk, sometimes to fly our kite. You can walk for miles and miles. From the Milnerton lagoon heading north it's one long strip of sand (and some great surfing) to Melkbos and beyond. I don't know how far it goes - I don't walk with a pedometer - but you could certainly walk all day if you chose!
