Blaauwberg or Blouberg? The name makes no difference!
Custom Search
Blaauwberg Blouberg is THE locale for all classic Table Mountain tableau hunters! ![]() This is a beautiful, dramatic beach, wide-open and miles-long. It forms the northern coast of Table Bay, so Robben Island lies before you, plus ships anchored in the lanes for Cape Town Harbour. Table Mountain shimmers away to your left, evocative of extraordinary 18th century voyages both by day and night. As far as beaches go, this one offers some amazing surf. It is also a regular haunt of kite fliers and kite surfers, so be warned because when the wind blows it really blows here! The best swimming beach is Big Bay, which is a kilomentre or two beyond Blaauwberg Blouberg proper. Similarly the most famous sundowner spot is the llawn at the Blue Peter Hotel.
For my part, I also like the look of Ons Huisie, a beach-front restaurant housed in one of the few remaining old cottages from back in the day. They serve lovely traditional Cape fare (plus the ubiquitous pizza/pasta that SA loves!) and have a kiddies menu too. All right behind the rocks that you see in the photo above :) Apart from a howling SouthEaster at times (which can be avoided if you know where and how), the only downside to Blaauwberg/Blouberg can be litter. Alas and boo-hoo, this is not the cleanest of Cape Town's beaches. The Cape Town harbour and other human activities in Table Bay contribute to an ongoing litter problem, although to be fair this is far worse at Milnerton lagoon, Milnerton lighthouse beach and Sunset/Dolphin Beach. Blaauwberg Blouberg is also a favourite with those looking for beach holiday accommodation without the hefty price tags of Camps Bay et al, because property here is slightly more reasonably priced. All in all, just what the travel agent ordered for a more budget conscious famil holiday :)
