Accommodation in Hermanus

Accommodation in Hermanus is NOT a scarce commodity – there are establishments aplenty to meet every taste and requirement.
However, in season (June to October for whale season and December – January for high summer) it's advisable to book ahead to make sure you get the accommodation you really want.

Let me re-phrase that...

In summer, don't think of visiting Hermanus if you haven't booked or at least phoned ahead! In early whale season there's a chance you might get lucky, but not during the peak whale months of September and October.

Hermanus is no longer a sleepy little dorp – the town now stretches many kilometres along the coast and is bustling with activity and permanent residents.

Where to stay becomes more of an issue – where exactly is that particular place you are considering in relation to the Hermanus attractions you are interested in?

An overview for accommodation in Hermanus

This little town has a small industrial area to the east on the way in from Capetown, a busy commercial centre around the original village and then sprawls out westwards along the clifftops and the coastline.

Before you reach Hermanus from the Cape Town side there are small towns – Fisherhaven, Hawston, Onrus, Vermont, Sandbaai -- which are not Hermanus ‘proper’ but may in fact be more affordable and peaceful, if peace is what you are looking for. They are a 10 – 15 minute drive from Hermanus and have far fewer amenities but are fantastic for sunny, sandy pursuits.

Driving beyond Hermanus to the west you reach Stanford (a quaint little village about 30 mins from Hermanus) and Gansbaai/Gans Bay (the well-known shark cage diving mecca nearly an hour’s drive from Hermanus).

Accommodation in Hermanus -- Different Areas

Hermanus itself is large enough to have different areas (dare I say suburbs?!) So what are the main ones and where do you stay?

There’s Eastcliff – on the eastern side of the CBD and atop the cliffs. It is nearest to the New Harbour from which the whale watching boats set out. It’s also closest to the industrial area but still quiet and residential and walking distance to the cliffs though more of sretch to the CBD.

There’s Central which speaks for itself. It’s busy and convenient for the town centre, walking distance to everything except beaches.

Then there’s Westcliff – yep you guessed right, it’s on the western side of the CBD and once again along the tops of the famous cliffs. This area is closest to the Old Harbour, now turned into a museum complete with old wooden whaling boats and artefacts. This is the area I would choose if I wanted convenient walking access to cliff tops, restaurants, and the vibey town square market.

Continuing westwards there’s Hermanus Heights or Fernkloof – closest to the Cape Nature fynbos conservation area and very convenient for the golf course. It’s set back against the mountains, still (just) walkable to the cliff tops, better to drive to the town centre unless you have all the time in the world.

Finally there’s Kwaaiwater – more cliffs and then Voelklip and the Lagoon Edge. These are the truly great places for summer beach holidays when families descend on Hermanus in droves all equipped with bucket, spade and sunscreen and ready to sandcastle themselves into oblivion! They are short on restaurants but an easy drive from the town centre. There’s a little convenience store nearby so you needn’t go to town for bead and milk unless you really want to.

Let’s Get Specific Now...

Knowing the territory as I do, I’ve picked out some particular accommodation in Hermanus that I like in the different areas. If you need help making a selection, or want more options you’re welcome to contact me at any time.

What about Hermanus hotel accommodation? Is it strictly of the mom-and-pop variety or are there up-market versions too?
